Thiruppavai Book Release - 19.01.2019

     Kongunadu Arts & Science College, together with Indica Coimbatore hosted the launch of the bilingual book, Andal Thiruppavai. The book contains the original verses in Tamil by the medieval bakthi work written by Andal, the poet-saint, the only woman among the twelve Azhwars (Vaishnavite saints). The book is published by N.Subbu Reddiar Centenary Publications, Chennai, headed by Thiru Subbu Ramalingam. The book also contains transliterations of the verses, pictures for each pasuram (verse), translation in English verse form and commentary in English by Dr.Shobha Ramaswamy, Assistant Professor of English, Kongunadu Arts & Science College and commentary in Tamil by Dr.R.Manimegalai, Assistant Professor of Tamil of the same college. Shri Rajesh Govindarajulu, entrepreneur, historian and Vice-President, Coimbatore Thiruppavai Committee was the Chief Guest and Shri M. Pramod Kumar, Convenor, Coimbatore Chapter, Shri. Rtn.MPHF. V.S.Sudhakar B.E., District Cairman-Vocational Training Center, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Millenium and Managing Trustee, Saruguru Trust, and Dr.Subramonian, Director, Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam Research Centre and Guiness Record Holder in Teaching were guests of honour.           

     The function began at 11.15 pm, with a prayer song by Dr.R.Manimegalai. Dr.C.A.Vasuki, Secretary and Director, Kongunadu Arts & Science College, presided over the function. Dr.Shobha Ramasamy welcomed the gathering and Dr.R.Manimegalai spoke about the significance of the work and the shaping of the book. In her Presidential Address, the Secretarty and Direcotor Dr.C.A.Vasuki lauded Indica for its involvement in the launch. She said that from her own experience Indian culture had a uniting strand from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and this was the Sanskrit language. Indian classical literature in Tamil had a rich tradition and that one day, upon hearing the Thiruppavai pasurams sung, she was attracted by their sweetness and thereto wanted to learn more about them. She then called upon Dr.Shobha Ramaswamy and Dr.R.Manimegalai to bring out the book in a form which is reachable to the young generation and therefore emerged this publication. She also appreciated the N.Subbu Reddiar Cenetenary Publications for bringing out the book.

       In her presidential address, Dr.C.A.Vasuki spoke about the beauty and power of Thiruppavai, which was authored by the only woman among the twelve Vaishnavite saint-poets called Azhwars. She lauded the efforts of the faculty members for bringing out the book which would be useful for the younger generation, especially those living abroad, who are not very comfortable with their mother tongue.

      Dr.V.Balasubramaniam, Principal, and Shri. M.Pramod Kumar, Convenor, Indica Coimbatore offered felicitations. Shri. M. Pramod Kumar spoke of Indic Academy’s wide reach and its aim of bringing an intellectual, cultural and spiritual renaissance based in on Indian thought. He stressed the need for carrying the crux of the Indian classics to the young and appreciated the efforts made by the co-authors in this direction.

      The book was released by the Chief Guest, Shri Rajesh Govindarajulu and Dr.C.A.Vasuki, Secretary and Director received the first copy.

       Thiru.V.S.Sudhakar in his felicitations stressed the importance of the reading habit and called upon the students to read newspapers on a regular basis to update their knowledge.

      Dr.Subramaniom, in his short speech said that the Supreme being is the author of every work that is of a spiritual nature. The authors are but the conduits through which the higher energy flows and therefore, the two authors had now taken a first step towards reaching a higher level of soul-consciousness.

       In his Keynote Address, the Chief Guest, Shri Rajesh Govindarajulu read out some of the verses and recalled his life-long association with it. He said that the symbol of Tamilnadu was the gopuram(temple tower) of Srivilliputthur which was the place in which Sri Andal was born. He also spoke of the regard that Krishnadevarayar and the Nayak saints had for the work. He explained the historical background of Vaishnavism in Tamilnadu and stressed the need for reviving our culture and taking it to the younger generations.

     The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr.R.Manimegalai, who began with the song and spoke about the bakthi tradition of Tamilnadu.

The function came to an end at 1 pm waith the National Anthem.
