Sports Day Celebrations

The 46th Sports Day of the college was held in the Marappa G. Aruchumi Auditorium on 22.02.2019.  Dr. C. A. Vasuki, Secretary & Director of the college presided over the event. The Chief Guest of the function ,Thiru.R.Pandiarajan, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District, rendered the Special Address on Sports Day.

The function began with an Invocation to the Almighty  by the students of the College Music Club. Dr. V.Balasubramaniam, Principal, welcomed the gathering.

Dr.C.A. Vasuki, Secretary and Director delivered the Presidential Address. The Secretary said that sports gave one not only joy and enjoyment but also fitness and the spirit of oneness. Team sports taught managerial skills and inculcated a balanced mindset. The Secretary quoted  Steven Thornley who said ”It is not the team with the best players but the players with the best team that wins.”  Dr.C.A.Vasuki  recalled that it was Mary Kom and Hima Das, nicknamed “The Ding Express” who came from underprivileged backgrounds and became magnificent individual achievers. Hima Das, the Olympic athlete was now the brand ambassador for sports for her state, Assam, and also the UNICEF Youth Member for India. Dr.C.A.Vasuki said that hockey should once again be given the importance it had in the days of Dhyan Chand. She went on to announce the happy news that the college had recently purchased 2.55 acres of land adjacent to the campus for the purpose of setting up a hockey field. A strong hockey team would soon be formed. The Secretary concluded her speech by saying “Success is where preparation and opportunity meet, and this college would provide the students with the opportunities they needed for success.”

Capt.Dr. P.K Kavithashri, Director of Physical Education presented the Annual Sports Report for the academic 2018-2019. She highlighted the various achievements such as that of Mr.G.Prasanth of II BCA who won I place in 62nd  National Shooting Championship conducted by the Rifle Shooting Association of India, New Delhi and has been selected to represent the country in China, Sajay Seelan of II B.Sc.CS (Aided) who participated in Dr.Ambedkar National Boxing Championship Tourament and won the gold medal, Mr.Venkatesh of II M.Com. who participated in the National Level Taekwondo Championship held in Maharashtra and won the gold medal, R.Vignesh, M.Phil, scholar of Commerce who achieved in Sport Yoga, Abilash of I B.A. English (SF) who participated in National level football tournament which was held in Goa and secured the III place. Video clippings of the achievements were screened.

The Chief Guest, Thiru. R.Pandiarajan, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District in his Special Address on Sports Day said that the students of the college should take pride in the fact that they are studying in an institution which has been accredited by NAAC with ‘A Grade and 3.64 out of 4 in the 3rd cycle and is a College of Excellence. Sports as well as education are being accorded importance here, he said, congratulating the sports achievers who have won accolades at international and national levels. He had special words of appreciation for the NCC cadets who had performed drills with precision while receiving him. One should concentrate on physical exercises, which would bear fruit in the future. Sports also helps in securing government jobs,’ he advised the students. The Chief Guest went on to say that success and failure depends largely upon chance and one should not feel downhearted if one fails. “Whatever you take up, you should work hard and develop your competence, he told the students. He further warned them about the misuse of mobile phones and spoke about the importance of wearing helmets and seatbelts. Learn as much as you can while you are a student,” he said, recalling his own hard study schedule. He also asked them not to neglect physical exercise and advocated the practice of yoga. Thiru. R.Pandiarajan concluded by asking the students to work hard but remain cheerful.

Medals and prizes were distributed to the prize-winners of various sports events. Cultural programmes by the students followed. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by the Sports Secretary,  Ms.Dharini S.  of III B.Sc.Biochemistry. The event came to an end at  4.00 p.m with the National Anthem.
