The Department offers Tamil as Part-I Language for the students of BA English Literature and BSc courses (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology) in the first four semesters and in the first two semesters for the students of BCom, BCom CA, BBM, BBM CA, BCA, Maths CA, BSc Computer Science, Computer Technology, Information Technology, Costume Design and Fashion & E-Commerce. From the academic year 1987, MPhil and PhD research programme in part time are also offered.
The Department is known for its enviable commitment to the development of the students into well-moulded individuals who can take lead roles in any classroom, academic, literary and cultural activities. The faculty members are very much involved in stimulating the linguistic interest and competence, creativity and human values of and among the students.
The curriculum provides sufficient opportunities to motivate the students to appear for the competitive examinations and inculcate personality development. The syllabus for all the semesters is framed in such a way as to improve the oratorical skill of the students; two hours per week and five marks in each paper are allotted.

The Department stands unique in having prepared Question Bank series for all the semesters from the year 2003 onwards.

Our research has social implications which are directly related to the present society. Both major and minor research projects are carried out by the faculty members regularly. The Department is also provided with computers with internet facility for research scholars and staff.
The members of staff of the Department have successfully conducted many research programme with the assistance of the University Grants Commission. Besides, they have also conducted Seminars, Workshops and Certificate Courses at the State as well as National Levels with funds secured from the University Grants Commission and the Folklore Research Centre of St. Zavier's College, Palayamkottai. The staff members have participated, presented and published papers and research articles in various Seminars / Workshops / Conferences both at the State and National Levels. As of today, the Department teachers have published 17 books and are further involved in publishing many books. They also continue to be subject experts at the University Level.
