ACTIVITIES OF THE CHAPTER
The Coimbatore Chapter has continued its efforts to popularise Science and foster a scientific temperament among the Scientist and Research members by involving them in a series of Workshops/Seminars/Lectures organised during the year 2008-2009. The main activities which have been organised during the year under report are detailed below:
- A 2-day National Seminar on Biodiversity - "Status, Conservation and Management" sponsored by the ISCA, Kolkata was organised by the PG and Research Department of Botany of Kongunadu Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Coimbatore on 12th and 13th September 2008. The National Seminar was well attended by Researchers and Scientists representing 38 institutions from all over India. Dr. T. Madan Mohan, Adviser, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India was the Special Guest who inaugurated the Seminar. Dr. Ashok Saxena, the General Secretary (Outstation), ISCA, Kolkata and a large gathering of members of the local Chapter attended and benefited from the Seminar.
- Under the auspices of the Chapter, the Department of Bioinformatics coordinating with the Department of Computer Science of Kongunadu Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Coimbatore organised a 2-day National Seminar on "Computational Algorithms for Bioinformatics" on 27th and 28th November 2008. The National Seminar was addressed by a galaxy of eminent speakers drawn from premier institutes of excellence which included Prof.P.Mathur, Centre for Excellence in Bioinformatics, Pondicherry University.
- Under the auspices of the local Chapter, the Department of Biotechnology at the Kongunadu Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Coimbatore conducted the following activities:
- Organised a Lecture on "Ethics and Biological Research" on 25th September 2008. A Magazine of the Department "Science News" was released by Dr.M.Aruchami, Convenor of the Local Chapter and Secretary & Director of the College.
- With a view to highlight the importance of proper management and marketing practices in the pharma industry, a lecture on "Management and Marketing in Pharma Industry" was held on 29.9.2008. The Lecture highlighted various career options available to students in the Life Science Departments and the growing importance of Clinical Research within the Pharmaceutical Industry.
- There was a Special Lecturer organised on the theme "Training as a Medical Microbiologist in England" on 28.11.2008 with experts in Medical Microbiology from the United Kingdom - Dr.Christopher Brightman and Ms.Jonesmith Brightman sharing their expertise and work experience in various hospitals in the United Kingdom.
- The PG and Research Departments of Chemistry in the Kongunadu Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Coimbatore organised Guest Lectures on the following themes under the auspices of the Coimbatore ISCA Chapter:
i) Introduction to Retrosynthetic Analysis on 12.8.2008. ii) X-ray Crystallography and its applications to small Molecules on 21.1.2009.
iii) Applications of Lithium and Lithium-ion Batteries on 18.2.2009. |

Workshops/Seminars/Lectures organised during the year 2009-2010
The following activities have been organised during the year 2009-2010 in collaboration with the Life Science Departments of the Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore -29 :
- Guest Lecture Series - A One-day guest lecture series was held on 03rd February, 2010. The First lecture on "Oceanographic instruments and general sampling procedures" by Dr.A.A.Mohamed Hatha, Reader, School of Marine Sciences, Cochin University of Science & Technology, Cochin was followed by a second lecture on "Nanotechnology and its applications" by Mr. S. Balaji, Lecturer in Microbiology, Hindustan Arts and Science College, Coimbatore. The Lectures were well received by the Researchers and Science students.
- Industrial visit - Bannai Amman Biocomposting Unit-An Industrial visit was arranged for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of Biotechnology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore to the Biocomposting Unit of the Bannari Amman Institute at Bhavani for educational and scientific purposes. They were given a detailed demonstration on the various processes and techniques for creating enriched farm yard manure. The process involved open aerobic composting and sugarcane baggase using microbial methods. The students had detailed discussions with the Institute faculty and were thankful to the management of Kongunadu Arts and Science College and the ISCA Chapter for arranging such a useful educational Institute visit.
Workshops/Seminars/Lectures organised during the year 2010-2011
The following activities have been organised during the year 2010-2011 in collaboration with the Life Science Departments of the Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore -29 : Guest Lecture Series:
- A lecture on "service through science" was delivered by M. Paranthaman, Director of research, TNAU, Coimbatore, held on 13th October 2010.
- Lecture on "Scope and application of molecular techniques in Leptospira sp." Dr. K. Natarajaseenivasan, Associate Professor, Dept. of Microbiology, Bharathidasan University, Trichy - 24, held on 19th August 2010.
- Lecture on "Global perspectives and career opportunities in Clinical research" AnandaPadmanabhan P, Managing Director, Consortium Clinical Research Pvt. Ltd., Coimbatore, held on 20th September 2010.
- A one day guest lecture series was held on 22.09.2010. The lecture on "Instrumental techniques on chemical analysis" by Dr. A. Baskaran.
- "How to become an entrepreneur?" - A lecture note given by Dr. Joshy V. Cherian, Omega Organics, Coimbatore, held on 21st December 2010.
- Lecture on "Applications of Proteomics in Biotechnology" Prof. Dr.M. Raveendran, Centre for Plant Molecular Biology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore - 641 003, held on 12.01.2011.
- "Role of Biotechnology in Forestry" Dr. N. Krishnakumar, Director, IFGTB, Cowley Brown Road, RS Puram, Coimbatore - 641 002, delivered a lecture on 12.01.2011.
- "Marine environment and its potential applications in biotechnology" Prof. Dr. K. Kathiresan, Centre of Advanced Study in Marine Biology, Annamalai University, Parangipettai 608 502, held on 09.02.2011
The lectures were well delivered by the researches and the science students.
Workshop:
- The programme offered to all the students of Biotechnology, Zoology and Biochemistry, Kongunadu Arts and Science College on the topic "Science Trek - Demonstration of Instruments" on 8th July 2010.
- For +2 School students from various Schools were offered two days workshop programmes on "Biotechniques and analytical instruments" - held on 27th and 28th August 2010.
- Gene and Protein analysis - Training programme conducted for Research Scholars and PG students from outside colleges and research institutes on 20th to 22nd January 2011.
The students had detailed discussions with the Institute faculty and were thankful to the management of Kongunadu Arts and Science College.
Conference:
Department of Biochemistry (PG) conducted an International Conference on "Biomolecular analysis - Technical approach" which was held on 17th February 2011. Three technical sessions were held.
- Dr. Sijayanand Chandrasekaran, Scientist, Univesity of Reenes Franhee, Talked on insights into non-covalent interactions in biomolecules: "A gas phase spectrospic study"
- Dr. K.T. Parthiban, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Plant Breeding and genetics, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. On Forestry as a source of secondary plant metabolitics.
- Dr. S. Lakshmi Subramaniam, group leader Dalmia cement for Research & Development, Coimbatore on Herbal drug development with specific reference to asthma.
75 members have participated. The detailed technical session was say useful to the participants. They were thankful to the management of Kongunadu Arts And Science College for arranging such a useful conference.
